In 2021, the winner of "World's Best Gamay" is a Beaujolais wine: Beaujolais-Villages 2020 from Domaine Béroujon
For the 11th Gamay International Competition last Saturday, 16th, some sixty tasters -professionals and informed wine lovers alike- tasted 879 Gamay wines from France and Switzerland (nearly 10% more than in 2020) in the Armonia tasting rooms in Limas. At the outcome, the trophy for the "World's Best Gamay", chosen by a "super jury" from the pre-selected wines, was awarded to the Beaujolais-Villages 2020 from Domaine Béroujon.
271 medals, including 128 Gold and 143 Silver, were awarded this year.
DOMAINE BÉROUJON AND THE ART OF GLORIFYING BEAUJOLAIS-VILLAGES
For four generations, the Domaine Béroujon vineyards have been cultivated in the Beaujolais tradition, with part in Beaujolais-Villages reds, rosés and whites, as well as Brouilly.
David Béroujon, 44, who has a vocational degree in winegrowing and oenology, practically grew up in the vineyards from the word go. Becoming a winegrower was an obvious choice from an early age. As a child, when he came home from school, he went straight to the vineyards to join his father. As a result, it was only normal for him to take the reins of the family estate and produce his first vintage in 1996, his heart set on developing the business. He now cultivates 10.5 hectares of vines.
The World's Best Gamay 2021 takes its roots in the commune of Salles-Arbuissonnas-en-Beaujolais. This cuvée, a result of meticulous work in the vineyards and 12 to 14 days of semi-carbonic maceration to preserve the fruitiness and roundness, offers a powerful, tannic wine, with black and red fruit aromas, nice freshness and balance, with mellow tannins. The wine that charmed the tasting jury is a well-rounded Beaujolais that pairs well with a whole meal, at any time of year (cuvée on sale in early September 2021).
« The World's Best Gamay trophy is a great recognition after a rough year. It's a guarantee of quality for my wine shop and restaurant customers, as well as for consumers. I'm delighted with this award, for my estate, but also for all the winegrowers who produce Beaujolais-Villages wines, my favorite appellation," added David Béroujon, 2021 winner of the Gamay International Competition.
This trophy illustrates the huge potential of the Gamay varietal and the wide range of methods used for apprenhending it. Domaine Béroujon's Beaujolais-Villages 2020 is a perfect example of that. Gamay is a plural grape variety, making it possible to produce different styles of wine for any drinking occasion, whether Festive, Expressive or Exceptional Beaujolais.
